A recent search on google(tm) turned up over 89,000 sites containing the words
Knight Foundry! So, there's lots of sites out there. These are some that we've
found. If you discover ones that should be listed here, email the webmaster.
National Trust for Historic Preservation has been one of our most important
resources, including the designation in 1996 of the Knight Foundry as one of
the Eleven Most Endangered Places.
The Samuel Knight Chapter of the Society for Industrial Archeology helped
found the current preservation effort at Knight Foundry. The Chapter has a
variety of activities related to the general theme of Industrial Archeology
throughout California. In a delightfully unexpected connection, a Chapter visit
to Folsom, CA in early 2004 "took a spin" on a railroad turntable reconstruction
that used parts cast at Knight Foundry, in one of it's last pours! It is a Chapter
of the National organization, the Society for Industrial Archeology.
The Friends of the Knight Foundry operated in the early 1990s to preserve and
operate Knight Foundry in cooperation with the late Carl Borgh, the then
owner. One of the products of their efforts is an excellent article by Ed Arata
giving the history of the Foundry and its impact on technology of the era.
Though ultimately unsuccessful in their ambitious goals, we are indebted to
them for their unstinting efforts to preserve the Foundry.
Anyone coming to the Foundry MUST visit the rest of Sutter Creek, the "Jewel
of the Mother Load" Here's a web site with a wealth of information. We're
there under Attractions.
Former Board Member Eric Delony reminded us that there was a collection of
images of the Foundry taken by noted industrial photographer, Jet Lowe, as
part of an Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) project. Here's the
top web page for the Knight Foundry HAER project. These images were taken
in 1996. This site is a repository for lots of HAER imagery and data, and is
searchable.
